QQ has compiled a list of the top five games/franchises of this generation (specifically, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii, as well as PC games made in the same period). With all this talk about the Xbox Infinity and PS4, they decided to make a list of the best that the Seventh Generation, now in its waning years, had to offer.
They are:
5. Borderlands
The first installment of Borderlands came out in 2009 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. An FPS with RPG elements, Borderlands has a unique art style and is endlessly customizable. QQ writes, “We can say this is the best, most successful example of innovation in gaming. Although there are only two installments, the game has established a good brand, and we look forward to the series’ long term development.” Borderlands 2 was released in September of 2012, and was one of the best selling games of 2012.
4. Mass Effect
Mass Effect was first released for the Xbox 360 in 2007, before being ported to the PC in 2008 and the PS3 in 2012. QQ considers it, “definitely the best game series of this generation, even the best series of all time.” A sci-fi action shooter RPG, Mass Effect has a unique atmospheric style and combines combat elements of third-person-shooters like Deus Ex, BioShock, and other popular works. Whether it’s the quality of graphics or in-game content, Mass Effect will not disappoint sci-fi gamers. There’s no question it will be considered one of the best game franchises for the next decade.
3. Gears of War
Originally released in 2006 for the Xbox 360, Gears of War got a PC port in 2007. QQ considers it “the first original masterpiece for the Xbox 360,” proposing that it brought the third-person-shooter game to a whole new level.
2. Uncharted
Uncharted has three installments, the first of which was titled Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and released for the PS3 in 2007. QQ claims the series has an unparalleled story, a lot of tangles, twists, betrayals, and action components. “If you want to play a Hollywood action blockbuster, this is it. This is the definition of fun.” With a Tomb Raider-style of exploration, Uncharted gives you the chance to adventure across jungles and ancient ruins, take advantage of a variety of modern weapons, and even use martial arts on enemies.
1. BioShock
Are you surprised? Of course not, the BioShock series was born to win the title of “Best Game.” Released in 2007, BioShock was a cross-platform game with ports on PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and even Mac OS X. The series has profound philosophical, psychological, and anthropological significance, along with sci-fi elements and, in the case of Infinite, can be considered “perfect art”. BioShock is a classic.
